LOCATIONS: London, Moscow, St Petersburg, Lisbon, Canada

It was one of the first American films to be shot on location in the USSR (actually it was the second). Red Heat was the first but with only a few scenes shot there - most of the action took place in the USA, whereas The Russia House was shot extensively in Russia with most of the action taking place there.

The cinematography was excellent, with the extended wide screen format beautifully capturing the Soviet capital and St Petersburg (or Leningrad as it was then called). The film also captures the charm and beauty of old Lisbon and its historic Alfama district, in a sunny dawn haze, overlooking the River Tagus - wide enough at that point to give the appearance of a view of the open sea.

Over the years, I have tried to identify the scene locations and visit as many as possible. Although I have not been able to verify the location of many of the interior shots, the film does seem to be consistent in using the interior of the actual building used to set the scene.
