Slideshow where Barley is shown various photos in order to identify
Dante (but he can't), and to see if he recognises Katya (he doesn't).

Early morning Lisbon, Barley refuses to help MI6. Ned & Walter try to convince Barley to
help them “prove their knowledge of an enemy”.

Me at Largo Das Portas de Sol |
The scene begins with Ned opening the curtains of the interrogation
room at Palacio dos Condes Do Vimosio,
Rua Ivens, then Barley is seen walking out on to what initially
appears to be a veranda of the same building, with Ned and Walter. In fact, the scene is shot some distance
from the Palacio, at the other side of town, at Largo Das Portas Do Sol – a famous
panoramic vantage point overlooking the Alfama district and out towards the
Tagus river.

Details:
Barley heading back to his flat, with Walter and Ned following at a
distance. A tram is seen descending a
hill and turns a corner at the building where Barley’s has his flat.
Notes:
The number 28 tram stops at the Das Portas Do Sol, the continues round
past Barleys flat, which us on the corner of the street Ecolas das Gerais. In
the film, the scene begins with a tram descending a small hill and turning the
corner; as the camera pans round following the tram, Barley can then be seen
walking towards his flat. For the tram enthusiast: this is a one- way section
of the tram route, and back in 1989, when the film was made, the one way
system was managed by a signal man who operated from a nearby bar,
apparently. On my trip in 2007, the
signalman was no more. Replaced by an automated system. The signalman can be
seen in this scene. I remember passing
this location but did not realise it was on the Russia House until after my
trip |
