Katya visits hospital	Location: Moscow Russia
Details: Katya visits a hospital to await a pre-arranged telephone call from Dante at a telephone in a remote / forgotten corner of the hospital.
Notes: Can anyone help me on this one?  I have not been able to identify this location.

Barley & Wicklow visit Soviet Publishers	Location: Moscow Russia
Details: Barley and Wicklow visit Alex Zapadny of VAAP - "the old Russian suffocating copyright agency at VAAP's offices. (VAAP– Vsesoiuznoeagentstvo po avtorskim pravam; Всесоюзное агентство по авторским правам, ВААП).  Then they visit Yuri, a Russian publisher, at his offices.  Yuri was played by Georgy Andjaparidze, who I understand was a senior research fellow of the Gorky Institute of World literature, but also a suspected KGB "mamka", a secret police agent.   Georgi Andjaparidze I did see a documentary once which claimed that he was essentially playing himself in the film.  In 1967, he accompanied Allan Sillitoe, an English writer and one of the "Angry Young Men" of the 1950s, on his jouney across the USSR in a blue Peugeot, and in 1969, he was minder to Soviet writer Anatoly Kuznetsov in London, when Kuznetsov defected to the UK.
Notes: I have not been able to identify either of these locations.

Kievskaya Metro Station

Location: Kievskaya Vokzal Square/ Europe Square Moscow Russia

Details: Barley and Wicklow meet Katya underground in Kievskaya Metro station.   The scene opens with Barley and Wicklow admiring the mosaics on the wall of the metro - it appears as if they are in some kind of art gallery...but then a metro train rolls into view and hundreds of passengers disembark the metro train and throng on to the concourse. Notes: the next scene is in Sergeiev Posad (formerly Zagorsk) which is a town with a famous monastery to the North East of Moscow.  If Barley, Katya and Wicklow were travelling there by train, they would have left from Yaroslavl train station rather than Kievskaya station (which is above the Metro station).

Details: Having met the metro station, Barley and Katya then appear at the monastery of Sergiev Posad, which at the time was at a city called Zagorsk. They climb to the top of a bell tower and then have the conversation: Who is Dante? Barley is more direct in his questioning of Katya in order to find out more about the author of the notebooks that were passed to British Intelligence.    What's Dante's real name, who is he? Does he test things? is he army, is he one man, is he two, is he a group? Does he like ice cream, does he like the movies? Walter ticks off his identity checklist for Dante as Katya reveals the information to Barley "LITMO -  Leningrad Institute of Mechanical and Optical Science - write that down fellas!"
Notes: Trains leave every 30 minutes between Sergiev Posad and  Moscow's Yaroslavsky train station. The station is located at Komsomolskaya metro station (red line). A ticket to Sergiev Posad costs 132 rubles (1.5 h, prices in 2012) and 181 rubles on express (5-6 times a day, 1 h). It is an easy day trip from Moscow. The monastery of Sergiev Posad is one of the most beautiful monasteries in Russia and one of the principal spiritual centers of the Russian Church. It is a combination of a fortress and a monastery. The seminary of the Russian Orthodox Church is located in the buildings of the complex. There are several churches to see, a holy source and in general the whole complex with its massive walls and gates is very picturesque. There are no admission price to pay except for the museum, which shows old religious objects and woven pictures of saints. At the weekend the monastery can get very crowded, as it hosts some very important icons (at least copies of them). In return it can be very interesting to observe the believers kissing the icons and praying for hours.

Analysis of Katya and Barley's conversation

Details: MIS and CIxA discuss the implications of Dante’s identity: Yakov Yefremovich Savelyev, gifted mathematician, physicist and top scientist in the Soviet military industrial complex.  “Savelyev?! –He’s the right hand of god over there  . . . and he says its shit! The Soviet Threat is one big lie?”   Barley talks to Katya on the telephone from his hotel room – announcing his imminent departure to Leningrad on the night train, to meet his “new American partner” for a pow wow.  Katya instructs him to sit on his luggage, as the Russian custom dictates one must do before a long journey, sigh a little  and make the sign of the cross (In the Orthodox manner – not   Roman Catholic*)

The Night Train to Leningrad

Barley & Wicklow Travel to St Petersburg	Location: Train Journey from Moscow to St Petersburg on “Yunost”
Details: Barley and Wicklow take the night train to Leningrad (now St Petersburg, of course) to meet ostensibly to meet the new American publishing partner of Abercrombie & Blair (Barley’s publishing house) – Jack Henzigger of Potomac Books.  This is the cover for the real reason for the trip: Katya has arranged for Barley to meet Dante in one of three possible locations in St Petersburg.   The scene opens with Barley and Wicklow on the train, looking out the window on to the Russian countryside.  Various scenes of countryside, settlements and dachas are shown passing by; then, to show we have arrived at St Petersburg, we are shown a tourist hydrofoil crossing the Neva towards the Winter Palace.   We are then shown various street scenes from St Peterburg: The Hermitage museum (the building propped up by columns of sculptured male figures, bearing the weight of the building on their shoulders), St Isaacs cathedral, Nevsky Prospekt passing by Kazansky cathedral, boulevards with images of heroic workers displayed on bill boards, apartment blocks,  Cathedral of Christ the Saviour on the Spilt Blood, Palace of Soviets on Moskovskaya square  and finally arriving at the Pribaltiskaya Hotel.
Notes: The night train between Moscow and Leningrad used to be the Red Arrow, Krasnaya Strela, sleeper, whereas Barley and Wicklow appear to be on the day time train “Yunost” or Youth.

Barley meets Dante in Leningrad

"OK, were off", Barley has got three chances to make contact with Dante, who has proposed three meeting places. Lion Bridge, Dom Knigi book store, and the Summer Gardens. These are the three locations which I cover here as well as Marsovoye pole which is near the Summer Gardens. There are a number of streets, boulevards, courtyards and alleys where we see Barley walking along but I have not yet tried to identify them - as they could be virtually anywhere in central St Petersburg.

Barley crosses Lion Bridge only to be approached by a black market dealer "you want to sell me something, cigarettes, currency, scotch". "You get lost?" "That's a good idea, why don't you try it?"

Then it's off to the bookstore Dom Knigi - House of Books on St Petersburg's main shopping street and thoroughfare Nevsky Prospekt.  Here, Barley and Wicklow can be seen among the throng of shoppers; Wicklow buys a book.  No sign of Dante though.  Barley is then seen strolling with a guide book through the summer gardens with its many statuary before passing Dante who is sat on a park bench.  














Observing Ned's advice in training, "the source is the star of the show, and the star decides whether to make the meeting or abort", Barley continues walking past Dante and out of the Summer Gardens, finally stopping in Marsovoye Pole - Field of Mars.  At the eternal flame memorial to the citizens of St Petersburg who had died during the 1917 revolution (and who were buried here at that time).   Dante approaches Barley and they make contact.  As they talk, the cathedral of Christ the Saviour on the spilt blood can be seen in the background.
